Kenya Meteorological Department has forecast an increase in rainfall across several parts of Kenya beginning Thursday, following a relatively mild start to the week.
According to the agency, light rains will be experienced in the early days, gradually intensifying as the week progresses. By Thursday, many regions are expected to receive heavier downpours, including afternoon and nighttime showers accompanied by thunderstorms in some areas.
The forecast for March 17–23 indicates that rainfall will affect multiple regions, including the Highlands both east and west of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley, the South-eastern lowlands, and coastal areas.
Counties in the Highlands East of the Rift Valley—among them Nairobi, Nyeri, Kiambu, Murang’a, Meru, and Embu—are expected to experience morning showers in isolated areas, followed by more widespread rainfall in the afternoons and evenings.
Similarly, regions in the Highlands West, including Kakamega, Kisumu, Nakuru, and Uasin Gishu, as well as areas around Lake Victoria, will see a shift from sunny intervals early in the week to more consistent rainfall later on.
The South-eastern lowlands—such as Machakos, Kitui, and Makueni—are also projected to receive increased rainfall, while coastal counties like Mombasa, Kilifi, Kwale, and Lamu are likely to experience showers that intensify from Thursday.
The meteorological agency has cautioned that some areas may experience sporadic heavy rainfall, raising the risk of localized flooding. Residents in vulnerable regions are advised to remain alert and follow daily weather updates.
Meanwhile, parts of North-Eastern and North-Western Kenya are expected to remain largely sunny and dry throughout the period.
Authorities are urging the public to take necessary precautions, particularly in flood-prone areas, as the country transitions into a wetter phase of the season.
