President Samia Adopts Abandoned Baby, Names Her Grace Samia Suluhu Hassan

Tabora, Tanzania – Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan has adopted a baby girl who was abandoned shortly after birth in Nzega District in Tabora Region, giving the child a new home and naming her Grace Samia Suluhu Hassan.

Authorities say the newborn was abandoned soon after she was born on January 17, prompting local leaders and child protection officers to begin efforts to locate her biological mother or relatives.

Despite several attempts by local administrators and social welfare officers, the search did not yield any results. With no family members coming forward to claim the child, the case was eventually brought to the attention of President Samia during her official visit to the area.

President Moved by Child’s Situation

During the visit, officials briefed the President about the infant’s circumstances. Moved by the child’s story and her uncertain future, President Samia decided to adopt the baby and assume responsibility for her upbringing.

The infant was formally handed over to the President by the Nzega District Commissioner in a brief ceremony attended by regional leaders, local administrators, and community representatives.

Call to Protect Vulnerable Children

Speaking after the adoption, President Samia emphasised the importance of protecting children and ensuring that every child grows up in a safe and supportive environment.

She noted that every child deserves love, care, and the opportunity to thrive, regardless of the circumstances surrounding their birth.

The President also urged communities to strengthen child protection systems and to support families facing difficult circumstances to prevent cases of abandonment.

Parents experiencing hardship, she said, should seek assistance from local authorities or social welfare offices rather than abandoning their children.

Raising Awareness About Child Welfare

Child protection advocates say the President’s decision sends a powerful message about compassion and leadership in addressing social challenges affecting children.

Like many countries, Tanzania occasionally records cases of newborn abandonment, often linked to economic hardship, social stigma, or family difficulties.

Authorities in Tabora say investigations into the circumstances surrounding the infant’s abandonment will continue, although officials acknowledge that identifying the mother may be difficult due to limited information.

A New Beginning

President Samia assured the public that the child will receive proper care, protection, and opportunities for a bright future under her guardianship.

The adoption has sparked widespread discussion across Tanzania about compassion, social responsibility, and the need for stronger community support systems to protect vulnerable children.
