The Government of Kenya has directed all sub-counties across the country to set up public information desks and emergency response centres as heavy rains continue to affect many regions.
The order was announced by Geoffrey Ruku, the Cabinet Secretary for Public Service, Human Capital Development and Special Programmes. He said the move aims to strengthen coordination and provide quick assistance to communities affected by flooding and severe weather.
According to the Kenya Meteorological Department, intense rainfall is expected to continue in several parts of the country. The weather agency warned that the ongoing rains could lead to flooded roads, overflowing rivers, and disruptions to transport and daily activities.
Emergency Response Measures
Under the new directive, every sub-county must establish rapid response stations in each division. These centres will help authorities monitor the situation, share information with the public, and deliver emergency support to affected households.
Deputy County Commissioners have also been instructed to track and report the number of families affected by floods and coordinate relief efforts with national disaster agencies.
Areas Expected to Receive Heavy Rainfall
Meteorologists say many regions are likely to experience above-normal rainfall. These include counties in western Kenya such as Nandi, Kakamega, Bungoma, Vihiga, Busia and Siaya, as well as parts of the Rift Valley including Nakuru, Baringo, Uasin Gishu and Trans Nzoia.
Counties in southeastern Kenya like Machakos, Kitui, Makueni and Kajiado are also expected to receive heavy showers. Coastal regions including Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu, Kwale and Tana River, as well as northern counties such as Marsabit, Wajir, Garissa and Turkana, have also been placed on alert.
Situation in Nairobi
Heavy rains have already caused flooding in parts of Nairobi, leaving some roads impassable and several households stranded.
National Coordination
To improve preparedness, the government has scheduled an emergency meeting involving agencies such as the National Police Service, Kenya Red Cross Society, National Youth Service and St. John Ambulance Kenya.
The meeting will focus on strengthening disaster response, rescue operations and support for affected communities.
Authorities have urged residents to remain cautious, especially on roads, and avoid crossing flooded rivers or driving through water-covered roads as the country continues to experience heavy rainfall.
