Kenya and China Strengthen Military Partnership During PLA’s 98th Anniversary

Kenya and China have renewed their commitment to military cooperation during celebrations marking the 98th anniversary of the founding of China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA). The event took place at the Chinese Embassy in Nairobi and was attended by top military leaders, diplomats, and government officials.

Speaking at the event, Chinese Ambassador to Kenya Guo Haiyan highlighted the PLA’s transformation over nearly a century. She praised the Chinese military’s strength and contributions to global peace under the leadership of the Communist Party of China. Guo, delivering her final official speech in Kenya, also recalled China’s role in World War II and its commitment to peace through the United Nations.

“Since 1990, the PLA has taken part in 25 UN peacekeeping missions and sent 47 naval fleets to escort ships in the Gulf of Aden,” she noted. “This is proof of our long-standing support for global security.”

Guo pointed to Kenyan President William Ruto’s recent state visit to China as a key moment in the two countries’ defense relationship. During that visit, both nations agreed to enhance cooperation in areas such as counterterrorism, joint training, and disaster response.

“We will continue to work with Kenya and African nations to promote peace and fulfill our duties as a responsible global power,” said Guo.

Kenya Army Commander Lieutenant General David Keter, who spoke on behalf of the Chief of Defence Forces, thanked China for supporting Kenya’s military training programs. He acknowledged the valuable skills Kenyan officers have gained through PLA-hosted training and praised the partnership in peacekeeping and humanitarian missions.

“Our collaboration has helped strengthen the Kenya Defence Forces both in capacity and experience,” Lt. Gen. Keter said. “We look forward to deepening this friendship and meeting shared global security challenges together.”

Officials from both countries stressed the importance of mutual trust and respect in the growing relationship. They also agreed to continue working together in the face of evolving regional and global security threats.

The celebration ended with a ceremonial toast to the PLA’s achievements, the strengthening China-Kenya partnership, and a shared vision for a peaceful world.
