Nairobi, Kenya – March 2, 2026 – Peter Maingi Kimani, also known as Menelik Kimani, has been released following his arrest over a viral TikTok video in which he threatened President William Ruto.
Kimani was arrested on February 26 by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) from a hideout in Gachage, Kiganjo, Gatundu South Sub-County.
He resurfaced on TikTok with a new account, confirming his release on February 27 but noting that his mobile phone was confiscated by authorities.
“Hey guys, it’s Menelik Kimani. I was arrested on Thursday and released on Friday. I am home and okay. The main problem is my phone is being withheld by the police, but I have a new account, so kindly follow it,” he said in a video posted on Sunday.
Activist Mwabili Mwagodi visited Kimani at his parents’ home in Cura village and questioned why the DCI confiscated his phone without a court order.
“The only time DCI is supposed to take your phone is when it is ordered by a magistrate or a judge,” Mwagodi said.
The arrest sparked public debate. Some criticized security authorities for targeting a TikToker for expressing threats, while others argued that Kimani’s actions violated legal limits on free expression, making the arrest justified.
