Tanzania has strengthened its position as East Africa’s leading maize producer after recording its highest maize harvest in history during the 2024/2025 farming season.
According to agricultural data, the country produced 11.7 million tonnes of maize during the season — a record-breaking figure that now places Tanzania as the third-largest maize producer in Africa.
Across the continent, South Africa remains the largest maize producer, while Nigeria ranks second. Tanzania now follows in third place, marking a major milestone for the country’s agricultural sector.
Growth Driven by Investment and Favorable Weather
The strong performance has been linked to several key factors. Improved rainfall in major maize-growing regions, increased access to quality seeds, and government support programs have all contributed to higher yields.
Over the past few years, Tanzania has invested in modern farming techniques, fertilizer distribution, and extension services to help farmers increase productivity. Expansion of cultivated land and better post-harvest handling have also reduced losses.
As a result, production has steadily grown, culminating in the 11.7 million-tonne harvest — the highest ever recorded in the country’s history.
Impact on Food Security and Trade
Maize is Tanzania’s main staple crop and a key food source for millions of households. The record harvest is expected to strengthen national food security and stabilize domestic food prices.
Beyond meeting local demand, the surplus also opens opportunities for exports to neighboring countries within the East African region, many of which depend on Tanzania during times of shortage.
Agricultural experts say maintaining this momentum will require continued investment in irrigation, storage facilities, and market access. Climate resilience and improved value chains will also be critical to sustaining growth.
A Rising Agricultural Power
By becoming the third-largest maize producer in Africa, Tanzania has confirmed its growing importance in the continent’s agricultural landscape. While South Africa and Nigeria still lead overall production, Tanzania’s latest achievement signals its rising capacity to compete at the highest level.
The record harvest not only reflects the hard work of farmers but also highlights agriculture’s central role in Tanzania’s economy. If current trends continue, the country could further strengthen its regional and continental standing in the years ahead.
