TANZANIA: NECTA Results Reveal Ongoing Learning Gaps in Mathematics and Biology

The 2025 Form Four results released by the National Examinations Council of Tanzania (NECTA) have shown a strong overall pass rate, but they have also exposed serious and persistent weaknesses in Mathematics and Biology.

According to NECTA Executive Secretary Prof. Said Mohamed, while the national pass rate rose to 94.98 percent, performance in key science subjects remains a major concern. Mathematics and Biology recorded lower scores compared to other subjects, highlighting gaps in understanding that continue to affect many students across the country.

Education experts say Mathematics remains challenging due to weak foundations built at lower levels of schooling. Many students struggle with basic concepts, problem-solving skills, and application of formulas. In Biology, learners showed difficulties in practical work, interpretation of scientific concepts, and answering structured questions.

Prof. Mohamed noted that these results point to broader issues in teaching methods, availability of learning materials, and teacher capacity, especially in science subjects. He emphasized the need for stronger teacher training, improved laboratories, and early intervention to support learners before they reach secondary school examinations.

Despite the challenges, NECTA acknowledged improvements in other subjects and praised students, teachers, and schools for the overall rise in pass rates. The council urged education stakeholders to use the findings as a guide for reforms rather than focusing only on headline success figures.

The Ministry of Education is expected to review teaching strategies, particularly in science and mathematics, as Tanzania continues to push for a stronger workforce in technology, health, and engineering-related fields.

Education analysts agree that unless Mathematics and Biology performance improves, the country may struggle to produce enough skilled professionals needed for national development.
