Tanzania Targets Over 30 Million Tonnes Annually at Dar Port as Capacity Expands

Tanzania is positioning the Port of Dar es Salaam as a major regional logistics hub, with plans to handle over 30 million tonnes of cargo annually as ongoing expansion and modernization efforts begin to bear fruit.

The ambitious target was highlighted on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, as a large vessel carrying 6,000 tonnes of wheat docked at the port, underscoring the port’s growing capacity to accommodate high-volume shipments. The expansion marks a significant milestone in Tanzania’s drive to strengthen trade, improve supply chains, and support regional economic growth.

Authorities say continued investment in port infrastructure, including upgraded berths, improved cargo-handling equipment, and streamlined operational systems, has significantly boosted efficiency. These improvements have reduced vessel turnaround times and enhanced the port’s ability to manage both bulk and containerized cargo.

The Port of Dar es Salaam plays a critical role not only for Tanzania but also for several landlocked countries in the region, including Zambia, Rwanda, Burundi, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Malawi. Increased capacity is expected to enhance regional trade flows and lower logistics costs, reinforcing Tanzania’s position as a key gateway to East and Central Africa.

According to port and transport sector officials, the expansion aligns with broader national development goals aimed at supporting industrial growth, boosting exports, and strengthening food and energy security. The ability to efficiently handle large consignments of agricultural commodities, fuel, and industrial inputs is seen as vital to sustaining economic momentum.

In addition to physical infrastructure upgrades, ongoing reforms focus on digitalization, customs efficiency, and closer coordination among port stakeholders. These measures are designed to improve transparency, enhance service delivery, and attract more international shipping lines.

As cargo volumes continue to rise, the Dar es Salaam Port is expected to play an even greater role in driving trade competitiveness, job creation, and economic integration across the region, firmly establishing Tanzania as a maritime and logistics powerhouse in Africa.
