The African Union (AU) has commended the conduct of Uganda’s 2026 general elections and congratulated President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni on his re-election.
In a statement issued following the January 15 polls, AU Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf praised the commitment of Uganda’s institutions and citizens to democratic processes.
“The elections reflect the dedication of Ugandan institutions and citizens to upholding democratic values,” Youssouf said.
According to official results announced by the Electoral Commission, Museveni won with 71.61% of the vote, securing another term in office.
Election Observation and Transparency
Youssouf also acknowledged the role of former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan, who led the joint African Union, Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA), and Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) election observation mission.
“The mission contributed to transparency and public confidence in the electoral process by assessing the credibility of the polls,” the AU chairperson noted.
The AU reiterated its commitment to promoting democracy, good governance, and constitutional order across the continent, and commended Ugandans for their participation, peace, and commitment to national development.
Regional and International Attention
Uganda’s election attracted significant regional and international attention, with multiple observer missions deployed as part of broader efforts to strengthen democratic governance in Africa.
“We applaud the people of Uganda for their active engagement and for contributing to the consolidation of peace, security, and development in their country,” Youssouf said.
The AU’s statement underscores the organization’s ongoing support for democratic processes and governance across Africa.
