Uganda’s Coffee Shipments Surge Over 60% on Plentiful Harvest

KAMPALA — Uganda’s coffee exports have climbed sharply, with shipments increasing by more than 60 % year‑on‑year, driven by a plentiful harvest and strong global demand, the agriculture ministry said.

The surge was particularly noticeable in the later months of 2025, with official data showing that shipments in November jumped over 60 % compared with the same month a year earlier, helped by good production in major coffee‑growing regions.

Uganda is one of Africa’s largest coffee exporters, predominantly shipping Robusta beans — a variety known for its high yield and resilience — along with Arabica from higher‑altitude areas. A robust harvest in 2025 boosted volumes shipped abroad and helped improve the country’s position in global coffee markets.

The strong export performance builds on earlier data showing significant growth throughout 2025. For example, September coffee exports jumped about 59 % year‑on‑year, with around 844,949 60‑kg bags shipped, reflecting strong output from central and eastern regions.

In addition, Uganda’s coffee sector has contributed to broader export growth, with export earnings from agricultural commodities such as coffee and gold driving significant increases in total export revenues.

The surge in shipments reflects both plentiful domestic production due to favourable weather and expanded acreage, and sustained global demand, particularly in traditional markets such as Europe and emerging ones in Asia.
