UK Urges Calm as China Conducts Military Drills Near Taiwan

The United Kingdom has called on China to exercise restraint after Beijing carried out military exercises near Taiwan, warning that the drills could raise tensions and risk conflict in the region.

A UK Foreign Office spokesperson said on Tuesday, “China’s military exercises around Taiwan this week increase cross-strait tensions and the risk of escalation. We believe the Taiwan issue should be resolved peacefully through constructive dialogue between the people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait, without threats, force, or coercion. We do not support any unilateral attempts to change the status quo or any activity that could destabilize the region.”

The UK reiterated its call for calm and stressed the importance of avoiding actions that could undermine peace and stability in the region.

In response, the Chinese embassy in London dismissed the UK’s statement, calling it “a misrepresentation of the facts and a manipulation of the truth.”

Taiwan has long been a flashpoint in international relations. While China considers Taiwan part of its territory, Taiwan sees itself as a sovereign nation. Military exercises in the Taiwan Strait often draw criticism from countries advocating for a peaceful resolution to cross-strait issues.

The recent drills come amid rising global attention on the region, with international powers closely monitoring any developments that could escalate tensions in East Asia.
