TANZANIA: Five Villages in Mbarali to Get Clean Water Through New Infrastructure Project

Five villages in Mbarali District are set to benefit from a new water infrastructure project aimed at improving access to clean and reliable water while protecting the environment.

The project is part of the Nature-Based Solutions (NBS–Usangu) initiative, which is being implemented in the Usangu Basin under the Rufiji River Basin. It focuses on helping local communities manage water sources sustainably while conserving the natural environment.

According to officials, the initiative brings together community members, local leaders, and environmental experts to discuss better ways of protecting rivers, wetlands, and water catchment areas. These natural systems are important for water supply, farming, and livestock keeping in the region.

The recent meeting held in the area focused on how communities can improve and manage nature-based practices, such as protecting riverbanks, restoring wetlands, and reducing activities that damage water sources. These efforts are expected to support the new water infrastructure and ensure long-term water availability.

Once completed, the project will provide clean and safe water to thousands of residents in the five villages, reducing the long distances many families currently travel to fetch water. It will also help improve public health, support agriculture, and reduce conflicts over water use.

Community members welcomed the project, saying it will ease daily life, especially for women and children, who are most affected by water shortages. Local leaders also expressed hope that the project will strengthen environmental protection while boosting economic activities in the district.

The water infrastructure project is expected to be implemented in phases, with continued community involvement to ensure sustainability and proper management in the years ahead.
