African Ministers Renew Call for Reforms at the United Nations

African foreign ministers have renewed their call for major reforms at the United Nations, saying the global body must better reflect today’s world. The call was made during the Second Africa–Russia Foreign Ministers’ Forum held in Cairo, Egypt, on December 19 and 20, 2025.

During the meeting, the ministers said Africa continues to be underrepresented in key UN decision-making organs, especially the UN Security Council. They stressed that the current structure is unfair and does not give Africa a strong voice, despite the continent being heavily affected by global peace and security decisions.

The ministers called for reforms that would give Africa permanent representation on the UN Security Council, with full voting rights. They said this would promote fairness, inclusivity, and more effective global governance.

They also urged stronger cooperation between African countries and international partners, including Russia, to support Africa’s development goals, peace efforts, and economic growth.

The leaders said reforming the UN is long overdue and is necessary to address modern global challenges such as conflicts, climate change, and economic inequality.

The forum ended with a shared commitment to continue pushing for UN reforms through diplomatic engagement and collective action, ensuring Africa’s interests are fully represented on the global stage.
