Sex workers in Masaka City have publicly declared their support for President Yoweri Museveni ahead of his campaign rally scheduled to take place at Liberation Square.
Speaking during a meeting that brought together sex workers from across the Greater Masaka region, the group praised President Museveni for restoring peace and stability in the country. They said the improved security situation has allowed them to carry out their work without fear.
However, the group also appealed to the government for economic support. They explained that although peace has helped them survive, many sex workers remain economically vulnerable and need help to improve their livelihoods or move into other income-generating activities.
One of the members said that peace has enabled them to work, but financial support is now needed to help them build a better future.
With the support of the Assistant Resident District Commissioner (RDC) for Kimaanya-Kabonera Division, Katumba Ssegawa, the sex workers have formed a Savings and Credit Cooperative Organisation (SACCO). The SACCO has more than 900 members from the Greater Masaka region and has so far saved Shs 25 million. The group is now seeking additional government funding to grow the initiative.
The chairperson of sex workers in Masaka City, Florence Mpomo, said the SACCO was formed to address long-standing economic challenges faced by members.
Assistant RDC Katumba Ssegawa encouraged the group to remain united, noting that organised groups have better chances of benefiting from government programmes. He said opportunities often favour people who are prepared and organised.
Masaka City NRM Chairperson Rogers Bulegeya praised the sex workers for speaking openly and urged them to take advantage of government programmes aimed at reducing poverty and improving household incomes.
Nyendo–Mukungwe Deputy RDC Mariam Kaberuka also commended the group for recognising government achievements, especially in the health sector, and called on them to continue supporting the NRM government.
President Museveni is expected to address supporters from Masaka City and surrounding districts during the rally as part of his nationwide campaign tour.
