Uhuru Kenyatta Urges Road Safety Vigilance During Christmas Travel, Challenges Graduates to Fly Kenya’s Flag Globally

Former President Uhuru Kenyatta has called on Kenyans to exercise heightened caution on the roads as the country enters the busy Christmas and New Year festive season, a period traditionally marked by increased travel and higher accident risks.

Speaking on Friday during Kabarak University’s graduation ceremony, the retired head of state reminded motorists, pedestrians, and public transport operators to remain vigilant and prioritize safety as families travel to celebrate the holidays.

“Merry Christmas and a happy new year, and remain vigilant on the roads,” Mr Kenyatta said, emphasizing the need for responsibility and care during the festive period.

Message to graduates

Beyond road safety, Mr Kenyatta used the occasion to challenge the graduating class to become Kenya’s ambassadors on the global stage, urging them to leverage their professional skills to elevate the country’s international standing.

“Be at the forefront, and I am sure that your success will not just be for Kabarak University but for Kenya and Africa,” he said, encouraging the graduates to pursue excellence and innovation in their respective fields.

He noted that the modern world is increasingly driven by ideas rather than physical borders, urging young professionals to think globally while remaining rooted in national development.

“You are entering a world where borders are less important than ideas,” he said. “Keep in mind that Kenya is already recognized in ICT, fintech and renewable energy. With your skills, you can position Kenya as a hub of innovation not just in Africa but across the globe.”

Call to seize local opportunities

The former president further encouraged graduates to take advantage of emerging opportunities within the country, as Kenya continues to strengthen its position as one of Africa’s growing economic and innovation hubs.

He emphasized the importance of applying education and talent locally to drive economic growth, create jobs, and contribute to national development, while also remaining competitive internationally.

Mr Kenyatta concluded by wishing the graduates success in their future endeavors and reiterating his festive goodwill to Kenyans, blending a message of personal responsibility on the roads with a broader call for ambition, innovation, and national pride.
