KENYA: Supreme Court Judge Ibrahim Mohammed laid to rest

Supreme Court Judge Ibrahim Mohammed was laid to rest on Thursday at the Kariakor Muslim Cemetery in Nairobi, following his death on Wednesday afternoon at about 4:30pm.

Justice Mohammed passed away just weeks before his planned retirement. He was set to proceed on terminal leave ahead of his mandatory retirement on January 1, 2026, after many years of service in the Judiciary.

Family members, friends, fellow judges, and national leaders attended the burial to pay their final respects. Among those present were former Chief Justice David Maraga and former Public Service Cabinet Secretary Justin Muturi. They praised the late judge as a principled, hardworking, and fair judicial officer who served the country with integrity.

Former Chief Justice Maraga described Justice Mohammed as a diligent and brilliant mind. He recalled working closely with him at the Supreme Court and said Kenya had lost one of its finest legal thinkers.

Justin Muturi highlighted the judge’s strong commitment to human dignity and human rights. He noted that during difficult moments at the Judicial Service Commission (JSC), Justice Mohammed remained calm and often acted as a voice of reason.

Justice Mohammed had a distinguished judicial career spanning 23 years. During this time, he played a key role in strengthening institutions, shaping important court decisions, and promoting access to justice for all Kenyans. His work left a lasting impact on the country’s legal system.

He is survived by his wife and four children.

As the nation mourns his passing, leaders and Kenyans from all walks of life remember Justice Ibrahim Mohammed as a dedicated public servant who upheld justice, equality, and the rule of law until the end of his life.
