President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has warned that the government will not allow chaos or violence in Uganda, especially as the country prepares for the 2026 general elections.
The President made the remarks on Sunday, December 14, 2025, while meeting National Unity Platform (NUP) parliamentary candidates who defected to the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM). The meeting was held at State Lodge Nakasero in Kampala.
Museveni said Uganda has no room for instability and warned that anyone planning to disrupt peace will be dealt with firmly. He urged political leaders to mobilize supporters peacefully and avoid encouraging violence during and after elections.
Among those who crossed from NUP to NRM are Ojangole Anthony, a parliamentary aspirant for Agule County and former NUP Chairperson in Pallisa, and Godfrey Kateu, a parliamentary aspirant for Pallisa County and former NUP Secretary General in the district.
The President welcomed the new members and thanked them for what he described as being “foresighted” in choosing to join NRM. He assured them and the public that the 2026 elections will be free and fair.
Museveni also warned young people against being used by what he called selfish opposition leaders to cause unrest. He specifically mentioned the formation of violent groups known as “egaali” and said security forces will take action against such gangs.
“People should focus on convincing voters with ideas, not violence,” the President said.
He praised Deputy Speaker of Parliament Thomas Tayebwa and Special Presidential Assistant for Press and Mobilization, Haji Faruk Kirunda, for spreading NRM’s ideology across the country. Kirunda told the President that more opposition politicians are planning to join the ruling party because of its leadership and vision.
Speaking on behalf of those who defected, Ojangole Anthony said they had been encouraged by some opposition leaders to plan chaos and bloodshed during elections but later rejected the idea.
“We cannot destroy our country. NRM has built Uganda for the last 40 years,” Ojangole said. He urged those who want to challenge the ruling party to do so peacefully through the ballot box.
The meeting was attended by several leaders, including Deputy Speaker Tayebwa, Pallisa Resident District Commissioner Majid Dhikusooka, Pallisa District NRM Chairperson Derrick Orone, and NRM flag bearers from the area.
As political temperatures rise ahead of the 2026 polls, President Museveni called on all Ugandans to maintain peace and protect the country’s stability.
