Kahama residents are set to benefit from a major improvement in water access as a Sh4.8 billion rainwater harvesting project moves closer to completion. The project, located in Mwendakulima Ward in Kahama Municipality, is being funded through a partnership between Barrick Buzwagi and the government.
During an inspection visit on Friday, the Deputy Mayor of Kahama Municipality, Shaban Mikongoti, received a detailed briefing from engineers and project supervisors on the progress made so far. He praised the initiative, saying it will help address long-standing water shortages in the area.
“This project is a big step toward ending water challenges that many households face, especially during the dry season,” he said. “We thank our partners for investing in solutions that support people’s daily needs.”
Barrick Buzwagi representative Tito Jonathan said the company remains committed to supporting community development through its partnership with the government under Twiga Minerals. He noted that access to clean and safe water is a key priority for the surrounding communities.
“Our goal is to ensure that residents, especially in mining-host areas, have reliable water access,” Jonathan said. “This project is part of our long-term commitment to improving people’s lives.”
The rainwater harvesting system is expected to serve thousands of residents by collecting and storing large volumes of rainfall, reducing dependence on seasonal wells and long-distance water collection. When completed, it will also support local institutions such as schools, health centers, and small businesses.
Local leaders and residents have welcomed the project, saying it will help reduce water shortages, improve sanitation, and promote economic activities in the municipality.
