Kenyan Police Officers Reflect on Their Heroic 18-Month Peacekeeping Mission in Haiti

Kenyan police officers who served under the Multinational Security Support Mission in Haiti have returned home after an 18-month peacekeeping mission in the Caribbean nation. Their deployment, which was filled with dangerous and challenging situations, helped restore order in Haiti, a country plagued by gang violence and instability.

The officers were officially welcomed back on Tuesday, December 9, 2025, at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), where they shared their experiences and emotions after their long and demanding mission. They expressed immense satisfaction at returning to their families, many of whom they had not seen for over a year.

During their deployment, the Kenyan officers played a critical role in restoring peace and security in areas severely affected by gangs. Their efforts included reclaiming vital infrastructure such as schools and medical facilities that had been overtaken by armed groups. Despite facing constant danger, the officers worked tirelessly to restore order and ensure the safety of civilians.

SSP Clapperton Imbiru, one of the officers, remarked, “We feel very great to be back home… East or West, home is best.” His sentiments were echoed by his colleagues, including P. Wahonya, who expressed his joy at finally being reunited with his loved ones after a long absence.

Joseph Kiriago added, “Ni shukran kwa Wakenya kwa maana waliweka imani na sisi, na tumerudi tukiwa salama,” which translates to “Thanks to the Kenyan people for trusting us, and we have returned safely.”

On Wednesday, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen hosted a special welcoming breakfast for the returning officers. He praised them for their bravery and professionalism, which contributed significantly to restoring a measure of peace in Haiti.

“For many years, the Haitians never had a chance to do exams, young children. Because of the order you restored, you have saved the present and the future,” Murkomen said, acknowledging the officers’ efforts in providing security that allowed for the continuation of essential activities like education.

The officers’ return was bittersweet, as three Kenyan police officers tragically lost their lives while serving in Haiti. The Cabinet Secretary and Inspector General of Police expressed their deep condolences for the fallen heroes and extended their gratitude to their families for their sacrifice.

Despite the dangers, the officers’ commitment to their mission was unwavering. They arrived in Haiti in June 2024, during a time when the country was gripped by severe gang violence. Their success in restoring some semblance of order is seen as a major achievement in the ongoing global peacekeeping efforts.

The mission, officially known as the Multinational Security Support Mission, has now been renamed the Gang Suppression Force. This reflects the shifting focus of the mission, which was initially intended to address the general security situation in Haiti but has increasingly focused on the violent gangs wreaking havoc in the country.

The officers’ return is not just a personal victory but a reflection of Kenya’s growing role in international peacekeeping efforts. President William Ruto had entrusted the officers with the national flag as a symbol of Kenya’s commitment to global security and humanitarian assistance.

The officers’ return marks a milestone in Kenya’s peacekeeping efforts abroad and has become a symbol of national pride. The success of this first contingent is a testament to Kenya’s dedication to international peace and stability. Their work in Haiti has been lauded as an exemplary display of courage, professionalism, and commitment to the protection of human life and dignity.

As the officers reunite with their families, they also become heroes in the eyes of many Kenyans, who take pride in the country’s contributions to global peace. Their mission in Haiti is a shining example of Kenya’s ongoing efforts to make the world a safer place, despite the challenges faced in volatile regions.

As Kenya’s role in international peacekeeping continues to grow, these officers’ experiences will be remembered as part of a larger commitment to global security. The country’s contributions to peace missions in various parts of the world are expected to increase in the coming years, highlighting Kenya’s position as a key player in maintaining peace and stability.
