Uganda has reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to Syria’s recovery efforts, emphasizing the importance of continued diplomatic and developmental support.
The pledge was made during a ceremony held in Kampala to mark Syrian Liberation Day, where senior Ugandan officials, diplomats, and religious leaders gathered to show solidarity with Syria’s ongoing rebuilding process.
The event, hosted by the Consulate of the Arab Republic of Syria in Uganda, saw the attendance of key figures such as Henry Oryem Okello, Uganda’s State Minister for Foreign Affairs, who served as the chief guest.
Also present was Deputy Mufti Sheikh Muhammad Ali Waiswa, who represented Mufti Sheikh Shaban Ramadhan Mubaje, alongside various diplomats and members of the Syrian community in Uganda.
Dr. Tamouth Moustafa, the Honorary Syrian Consul to Uganda, delivered the keynote address, reflecting on Syria’s painful history under previous regimes and the progress made since the country’s liberation. “It has been a year and a half since the Syrian people liberated themselves from violence and tyranny,” Dr. Moustafa stated. “Today, we gather to mark a new chapter for Syria, despite the ongoing challenges posed by external aggression, notably from Israel, and other geopolitical pressures.”
Dr. Moustafa also expressed gratitude toward Uganda for providing a welcoming environment for Syrians, many of whom have established successful businesses within the country.
He acknowledged Uganda’s crucial role in supporting the Syrian people during this transitional phase, emphasizing that Uganda’s hospitality and resilience remain pivotal for Syria’s long-term recovery.
Minister Henry Oryem Okello reiterated Uganda’s commitment to supporting Syria’s peace and recovery efforts, underscoring that Uganda remains dedicated to promoting peaceful resolutions to the Syrian conflict.
“Uganda stands firmly with Syria as it rebuilds, and we are prepared to strengthen our cooperation in areas such as knowledge exchange, cultural diplomacy, and technical development,” Oryem Okello said.
The minister further highlighted Uganda’s long-standing diplomatic ties with Syria, noting that both countries share a vision for enhanced collaboration in various sectors, particularly in trade, education, and technology. “There are vast opportunities for both nations to expand their partnership and explore new avenues for cooperation,” he added.
The event also underscored the growing efforts to revitalize the relationship between Uganda and Syria. As both nations seek to move forward from years of conflict and instability, the ceremony served as a reminder of the importance of international solidarity in times of recovery and rebuilding.
Uganda’s continued support for Syria reflects a broader commitment to global peace and stability, and the event highlighted the vital role of African nations in supporting conflict recovery across the world.
