Tanzania has announced new efforts to modernise its transport sector by increasing the use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI). The plan aims to improve safety, efficiency, and service delivery across the country’s rapidly growing transport system.
According to Mr. Eliud Kataraihya, the Head of ICT at the Land Transport Regulatory Authority (Latra), digital technology will play a key role in solving long-standing challenges such as poor data management, weak regulation, road safety concerns, and delays in public transport.
He explained that Latra is now working on new digital systems that will help monitor transport operators, improve compliance, and make services more reliable for passengers.
Key areas of digital transformation:
Smart monitoring systems: AI-powered tools will help track buses, trucks, and other public transport vehicles to ensure they follow safety rules and approved routes.
E-ticketing and digital payments: These are expected to reduce corruption, increase transparency, and make travel more convenient.
Traffic management technology: ICT systems will help reduce congestion, particularly in major cities like Dar es Salaam.
Data-driven decision-making: AI tools will help the government predict transport demand, identify risks, and plan new infrastructure more effectively.
Kataraihya noted that adopting modern technology is essential as Tanzania’s population and transport needs continue to grow. He said the government is also partnering with private-sector innovators to develop local digital solutions that fit Tanzania’s unique challenges.
Experts believe that ICT and AI could significantly improve public transport reliability, reduce operational costs, and enhance passenger safety—especially if the systems are rolled out nationwide.
These efforts support the government’s wider digital transformation agenda, which aims to make Tanzania a regional leader in modern, tech-driven transport services.
