Kikuyu Law Courts Reopen After Four-Month Shutdown Following Gen Z Protest Arson

After four months without judicial services, residents of Kikuyu constituency on Monday celebrated the reopening of the Kikuyu Law Courts, which were destroyed during the Gen Z protests in June 2025.

The reopening restores a crucial institution in the region, where hundreds of cases — particularly criminal matters — had stalled after the facility was burned down during violent clashes between police and protesters.

Kikuyu Law Court Administrator Duke Mainye said the judiciary is now fully engaged in reinstating all services and ensuring residents regain access to justice. He assured the public that documents held as sureties, including logbooks and title deeds, would be returned as recovery processes continue.

“There are burnt title deeds, and some of those cases are being handled by the management to determine how best to fast-track them. It has been a challenge to continue with cases, especially criminal cases,” Mainye said.

Local leaders praised the joint effort that made the reconstruction possible. Kikuyu MCA Kamau Boro noted that the new buildings were funded and built by the Kikuyu Business Community, working in partnership with religious groups.

For the past four months, many residents had been forced to travel to Limuru Law Courts to seek justice, often in urgent criminal cases where suspects could not be held in open court due to the destroyed facilities.

“Criminal cases were taking too long, and urgent matters had to be taken to Limuru. We are grateful that justice will now be delivered on time,” said MCA Boro.

The Kikuyu Law Courts were set ablaze during nationwide anti-government protests held in solidarity with victims of the June 2024 anti–Finance Bill demonstrations. Protesters in Kikuyu town clashed with police for hours, torching the courthouse and burning tyres along major roads.

The reconstruction and reopening now mark a key step in restoring order, access to justice, and public confidence in state institutions in the area.
