The Tanzania Episcopal Conference (TEC) has called for an independent investigation into the violent events that took place on October 29, saying the country deserves truth, justice, and accountability.
Speaking on behalf of the Catholic Church, TEC President Bishop Wolfgang Pisa said the violence, which left several people injured and caused widespread fear, has raised serious concerns among citizens and religious leaders.
Although the bishops did not reveal new details about the incident, they said the events of October 29 have left many questions unanswered. They stressed that only a transparent and independent probe can help uncover what really happened, who was responsible, and how such incidents can be prevented in the future.
Bishop Pisa noted that Tanzania is known for peace and unity, and any form of violence threatens the nation’s stability.
“We urge the government to conduct an independent investigation so the truth can be known and justice can be served,” he said.
The Catholic leadership also encouraged Tanzanians to remain calm and avoid actions that may fuel further tension. They emphasized that accountability is essential to maintaining public trust, especially after the 2025 election period, which has seen heightened political activity and growing calls for reforms.
The bishops’ statement comes shortly after several other religious and civic groups—including the Council of Imams—also demanded clarity and transparency regarding the October 29 unrest.
The TEC said it will continue to pray for peace, healing, and unity as the nation seeks answers.
