Imams Call for Transparency and Justice After Tanzania’s 2025 Election

The Council of Imams in Tanzania has called on national leaders and institutions to uphold truth, transparency, and accountability following the 2025 general election.

Speaking after a special meeting held in Dar es Salaam, the religious leaders said many citizens are still confused and concerned about reports of violence and irregularities that happened during and after the election. They urged the government, security agencies, and the electoral commission to listen carefully to the public and give clear explanations on what took place.

The Imams said that restoring trust is important for peace and unity in the country. They noted that several communities are still recovering from the violence that erupted on October 29, when protests broke out in different parts of the country.

They advised political leaders to avoid statements that may fuel tension and instead encourage dialogue. The Council also appealed to young people to stay calm and peaceful as investigations continue.

According to the Imams, Tanzania must learn from the events surrounding the election so the same problems do not happen again. They emphasized that a strong democracy depends on honesty, justice, and respect for human rights.

Their message comes at a time when other religious groups—including Catholic Bishops—are also calling for independent investigations into the October 29 violence.

The Council of Imams said they are ready to support national efforts aimed at healing the nation and ensuring that every voice is heard.
