Over 100,000 Evacuated as Super Typhoon Fung-wong Batters the Philippines

More than 100,000 people have been evacuated from coastal and low-lying areas across the Philippines as Typhoon Fung-wong intensified into a super typhoon, authorities said on Sunday, November 9, 2025.

Packing sustained winds of up to 240 kilometers per hour, Fung-wong brought torrential rains, powerful gusts, and widespread flooding across the eastern and central regions of the country.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) reported that the typhoon made landfall early Sunday morning in Samar Province before sweeping toward Luzon Island.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said thousands of families have sought refuge in evacuation centers as emergency teams were deployed to assist residents in affected areas.

Power lines have been cut in several provinces, and transportation services — including flights and ferry operations — have been suspended as a precaution.

“Fung-wong is one of the strongest storms to hit the Philippines this year,” said NDRRMC spokesperson Mark Timbal. “Our priority remains saving lives, ensuring access to food, water, and shelter for displaced families.”

Coastal communities have been urged to remain on high alert for storm surges and landslides, particularly in mountainous regions already saturated by heavy rainfall.

The Philippines, located along the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” experiences an average of 20 tropical cyclones annually. Officials warned that the effects of climate change are intensifying these storms, making them more unpredictable and destructive.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has called for nationwide coordination among local governments, disaster agencies, and the military to accelerate relief and rescue operations.

Meteorologists expect Fung-wong to weaken slightly as it moves over Luzon before exiting into the South China Sea by Tuesday, but warned that strong winds and flash floods may persist through Monday.
