KENYA: Police Arrest Man with 320 Rolls of Bhang in Vihiga Following Tip-Off

Vihiga, Kenya — Police officers in Vihiga County have arrested a man found in possession of 320 rolls of cannabis sativa during an operation conducted in Mpaka Village, underlining the government’s continued crackdown on illegal narcotics across the region.

According to a statement issued by the National Police Service (NPS), the arrest took place on Thursday evening after officers received a tip-off from members of the public about suspicious drug activity in the area.

Acting swiftly on the information, officers from the local police station launched a raid that led to the suspect’s capture.

“The suspect was found with 320 rolls of bhang during the operation. The drugs were seized and secured as exhibits,” the police statement read.

The suspect, whose identity is being withheld pending formal charges, was immediately taken into custody and is currently being processed at the Vihiga Police Station. Authorities confirmed that he will be arraigned in court once investigations are complete.

The police commended residents for providing actionable intelligence that led to the successful operation. They urged the public to continue supporting the fight against illegal drug trade, noting that community cooperation remains vital in dismantling narcotics networks.

“We appreciate the vigilance of the public and urge citizens to continue sharing information that can help curb the sale and use of illegal drugs,” added the NPS.

The arrest comes amid heightened efforts by law enforcement agencies to combat drug trafficking and substance abuse in Western Kenya. In recent months, police have intensified patrols and intelligence-led operations in hotspot areas within Vihiga, Kakamega, and Busia counties.

Authorities say the sale and consumption of cannabis have contributed to rising cases of youth delinquency and mental health challenges, prompting renewed calls for tougher enforcement of Kenya’s Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Control Act.

Local leaders have welcomed the operation, urging parents and community groups to take a proactive role in guiding young people away from drug abuse.

“The fight against drugs cannot be won by police alone,” said Pastor Joseph Kihara, a community leader in Mbale Town. “We must all help protect our youth from the dangers of addiction.”

The suspect remains in custody as police prepare to forward the case file to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) for further action.
