There is growing concern among Kampala’s business community after city tycoon Godfrey Kyeswa was flown to the United States of America for emergency medical treatment following a sudden and severe illness.
Sources told this website that Kyeswa’s local doctors advised that he be transferred abroad after his condition worsened despite treatment in Uganda. The businessman, known for keeping a low profile despite his vast wealth, was airlifted early this week accompanied by close family members and friends.
According to a source within his inner circle, Kyeswa is currently admitted to a hospital in the U.S., where he has been placed in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and put on an oxygen machine to help him breathe.
“Two of our friends traveled with his relatives to visit him, but the doctors stopped them from entering because he was in intensive care,” a close friend said. “Even his caretaker, who traveled with him, was not allowed in. That’s when we realized the situation was very serious.”
For over 15 years, Kyeswa has struggled with several health complications, including diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart-related problems. However, family members revealed that he was recently struck by a strange new illness that affected both his physical and mental health, prompting the emergency evacuation.
Before leaving for the U.S., Kyeswa reportedly instructed his brother, Tom Kitandwe — also a well-known Kampala businessman — to oversee his businesses and properties during his absence.
This decision sparked anxiety among members of the Kwagalana Group, an exclusive association of Kampala’s wealthiest businessmen, and within his own family.
Kyeswa is one of Uganda’s most prominent property owners. His investments span across Kampala and Mukono District, including:
• Tradelink Building, Trans Nile Building, and Mid City Building in the central business district.
• Several rental properties around Makerere and Wandegeya.
• A multi-billion shilling mansion in Mukono.
• A bakery, schools, and other learning institutions in Mukono District.
Family sources say the tycoon’s illness has disrupted management of his businesses, especially as some tenants have protested against recent rent increases and other new payment terms.
When contacted for a comment, one of Kyeswa’s sons declined to speak on the matter, saying the family is focused on their father’s recovery.
Members of the business community have expressed concern and sent messages of support to the Kyeswa family. Many hope that he will recover soon and return home to resume his work.
As the tycoon continues to receive treatment in the U.S., his family and friends in Kampala remain anxious, praying for his quick recovery.
