Ugandans are mourning the loss of Professor Livingstone Serwadda Luboobi, a renowned mathematician and former Vice Chancellor (VC) of Makerere University.
Professor Barnabas Nawangwe, the current Vice Chancellor of Makerere University, confirmed on Thursday that Professor Luboobi passed away on the evening of Wednesday, July 16, 2025, at the age of 79.
Professor Nawangwe shared that Luboobi, born on December 25, 1944, in Rakai District, had been battling illness for some time. While the exact cause of death has not been disclosed, Nawangwe emphasized that Luboobi’s passing marks the end of an era in Uganda’s academic landscape.
Luboobi served as Vice Chancellor of Makerere University from 2004 to 2009, overseeing a period of significant transformation at the institution.
He was widely remembered for his groundbreaking work in applied mathematics and mathematical modeling, particularly in the study of biological systems and infectious diseases. His research was instrumental in improving the understanding of epidemic dynamics in sub-Saharan Africa.
Nawangwe described Luboobi as one of Uganda’s most distinguished scholars, noting, “His contributions to academia and leadership at Makerere will be remembered with great respect and admiration.”
During his tenure as Vice Chancellor, Luboobi was known for his humility, accessibility, and staunch defense of academic freedom.
His leadership style encouraged open dialogue and academic freedom, making Makerere a respected institution on both the national and international stages.
Before becoming Vice Chancellor, Luboobi held several academic and administrative roles at Makerere University, mentoring countless students and researchers. His influence on the university community extended far beyond his administrative work.
Luboobi’s passing is a significant loss not only for his family and Makerere University but for the entire academic community in Uganda and beyond. His legacy continues to inspire, emphasizing academic integrity, intellectual openness, and respect for the student voice in university leadership.
Funeral arrangements have yet to be officially announced by the family or Makerere University.
However, Professor Luboobi’s contributions to Uganda’s higher education sector will remain celebrated, and his impact will resonate for generations to come.
