The Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development has, on Thursday, July 16, 2025, handed over brand-new vehicles to Uganda’s cultural leaders during the launch of the Traditional Leaders Enhancement Programme, aimed at boosting their role in community mobilization and national development.
This initiative aims to strengthen cultural leaders’ ability to mobilize communities for social and economic transformation.
Minister Betty Amongi officiated the event, expressing gratitude to President Museveni for delivering on his promise to equip cultural leaders with essential resources.
She also acknowledged Vice President Jessica Alupo for her support of the Ministry and cultural institutions.
“This initiative demonstrates the government’s commitment to preserving our heritage, promoting cultural identity, and empowering cultural leaders to effectively mobilize communities for social and economic transformation,” said Amongi.
Amongi noted that cultural institutions play a vital role in Uganda’s social fabric. They mediate conflicts, promote positive values, support programs to increase household income, and help end gender-based violence.
Permanent Secretary Aggrey Kibenge added that the vehicle gift underscores the government’s respect for Uganda’s rich traditions and moral foundations.
“Cultural institutions have long been a cornerstone of moral guidance, dispute resolution, and cultural preservation. As Uganda continues on its development path, these institutions remain crucial partners in promoting peace, cultural identity, and community mobilization for transformation,” Kibenge stated.
He emphasized that this step should usher in deeper trust and collaboration between the government and cultural institutions to guide Uganda toward its development goals.
To ensure long-term use, Kibenge advised cultural leaders to maintain their vehicles at authorized Toyota Uganda service centers.
The Traditional Leaders Enhancement Programme is a government-led initiative designed to support traditional leaders in governance, socioeconomic development, and wealth creation within their communities.
The provision of these vehicles marks an important first step toward strengthening the effectiveness of cultural institutions across the country.
