The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has announced the invitation for prequalification bids from Chinese contractors to expand the Pangani–Muthaiga–Kiambu–Ndumberi Road. This major infrastructure project is set to receive funding from China’s Export-Import (EXIM) Bank.
The upgrade aims to transform the B32 corridor, which connects Muthaiga, Kiambu, and Ndumberi, from a two-lane road into a four-lane dual carriageway. The new road will feature service lanes and pedestrian walkways, making it a vital link for eastern Nairobi and helping to ease traffic congestion along Kiambu Road and the Thika Superhighway.
The project will include several key improvements, such as new interchanges at Kamiti Road, Banana Road, and the Northern Bypass intersections. Six pedestrian footbridges will be constructed, and adjacent roads like Ridgeways Road and the Evergreen–UN Avenue in Runda will be upgraded. Additionally, the Muthaiga–Kirigiti–Ndumberi corridor will be expanded to accommodate more lanes to improve traffic flow.
The total construction period for the project is expected to take 36 months, with an additional 24-month defect notification period.
To qualify for the prequalification, contractors must have demonstrated an annual construction turnover of at least USD 250 million over the last five years. The prequalification tender will close on August 22, 2025.
This project is part of Kenya’s broader plan to improve road infrastructure, reduce traffic congestion, and enhance pedestrian safety in one of Nairobi’s busiest areas.
