A teacher at Gongoni Primary School in Kilifi South Sub-County has been arrested following the death of a 15-year-old pupil, who allegedly died from injuries linked to corporal punishment.
According to police, the incident occurred on Friday, September 19, 2025, during the last lesson before games. The teacher, identified as Mr. Ian Tembo, allegedly ordered Grade 8 pupils to kneel and then administered corporal punishment.
Some pupils were caned on their bodies, while others were allegedly struck on the head.
Among those punished was Anestine Dzidza Tunje, who returned home that day but later complained of severe headaches.
Her condition worsened over the weekend. She was taken to Kilifi County Hospital, where doctors tried to stabilize her. Despite treatment, Anestine died on September 25, 2025.
Her family reported the incident to authorities two days later, leading to an investigation by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).
Police arrested the teacher on Wednesday, October 1, 2025, and placed him in custody at Mtwapa Police Station. Investigators are seeking more time from the court to complete inquiries before charges are filed.
Kilifi South Sub-County Police Commander Hassan Kochale confirmed the arrest.
“The suspect is in custody, and we are gathering evidence to establish the connection between the punishment and the student’s death,” Kochale said.
The case has shocked parents and education stakeholders in Kilifi, reviving debate about the ban on corporal punishment in Kenyan schools. Many parents and teachers are now calling for stricter enforcement of child protection laws to prevent similar tragedies.
