The opposition coalition in Kenya has vowed to remain united ahead of the 2027 General Election, pledging to present a single presidential candidate to challenge President William Ruto.
Speaking during the PLP National Delegates Conference at Ufungamano House in Nairobi, opposition leaders, including Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, DAP-K boss Eugene Wamalwa, DP’s Justin Muturi, DCP’s Rigathi Gachagua, and PLP leader Martha Karua, called for solidarity and warned against betrayal within their ranks.
Martha Karua officially declared her 2027 presidential bid and made a bold promise:
“If elected president, I will serve for only one term. We will ensure the opposition fields one candidate to defeat Ruto,” Karua said.
Eugene Wamalwa echoed her sentiment, stating:
“A time is coming when we will make sacrifices. We must ensure Ruto returns to Sugoi after one term.”
Rigathi Gachagua pledged his full support, saying he was ready to make sacrifices as he once did for Ruto, while Kalonzo Musyoka reassured Karua that the coalition is “a government in waiting.”
The opposition leaders accused the Kenya Kwanza government of implementing policies that have worsened living conditions since 2022 and alleged there is a deliberate plot to divide them ahead of 2027.
Justin Muturi urged members to remain loyal to the cause, saying:
“Our presence here shows unity. If you see one of us backtracking, know they have betrayed the movement.”
The PLP conference also resolved to strengthen its party structure by creating three deputy party leader positions and forming a 16-member shadow cabinet to offer alternative policies to the government.
The opposition’s unity and Karua’s one-term pledge set the stage for a fierce contest in 2027, as they aim to unseat President Ruto in what could be one of the most competitive elections in Kenya’s history.
