The Uganda government has extended the indefinite suspension of the Automated Express Penalty System (EPS Auto) as a detailed review of the system continues.
The announcement was made on July 13, 2025, through an official statement shared on the Ministry of Works and Transport’s X official handle.
The Ministry confirmed that a comprehensive review is underway following the suspension of EPS Auto, which was put on hold earlier due to growing complaints.
The system had triggered widespread public concern, especially among taxi and bus operators. They raised issues such as unclear speed limit signage, extremely high fines, and technical faults in how the system issued penalties.
“A team of legal and technical experts from the Ministry of Works and Transport, Uganda Police Force, and Ministry of Justice is reviewing the system to resolve the raised concerns,” the Ministry said in its statement.
Ministry spokesperson Susan Kataike explained that while the EPS Auto system remains suspended, all other traffic laws are still in effect. She urged all road users to continue obeying traffic rules and drive responsibly to prevent accidents.
The government has reassured the public that the review is aimed at making EPS Auto more transparent, fair, and reliable before it is brought back. In the meantime, law enforcement agencies will continue road safety patrols and use other traffic management measures to keep Ugandan roads safe.
