Eight police officers from Maseno Police Station are in custody following the mysterious disappearance of a Toyota Land Cruiser that had been recovered and parked at the station earlier this month.
According to an official police report, the vehicle was initially recovered on September 10, 2025, after being found abandoned at Maseno Shopping Centre.
It was later taken to Maseno Police Station and placed in the station’s parking yard as investigations continued.
However, the vehicle later vanished under unclear circumstances, triggering a probe that has now implicated officers from the same station.
Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) headquarters in Nairobi were dispatched to Maseno, where they arrested the eight officers on Monday evening.
The suspects — Constables Shaban Omar, Stanley Kosgei, Fredrick Lubatse, Harrison Muchiri, Charles Mutahi, Jackson Lugadili, Elphas Sigoi, and Isaac Kipgeno — were transferred to Kisumu Central Police Station, where they are being held pending further interrogation.
Authorities say the arrests are part of a broader effort to crack down on misconduct within the police service. Kisumu County Police Commander confirmed that disciplinary and criminal investigations are ongoing, promising that anyone found culpable will face prosecution.
“The law will take its course. If they are found guilty of involvement in the disappearance of the motor vehicle, they will be arraigned in court,” a senior officer said on condition of anonymity.
The disappearance of recovered vehicles from police stations has been a recurring concern in Kenya, raising questions about internal accountability and the security of exhibits placed under police custody.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations is expected to release a comprehensive report once investigations are complete. The vehicle’s whereabouts remain unknown as the search continues.
This case has sparked public debate on social media, with many Kenyans calling for stricter measures to curb corruption and theft within law enforcement agencies.
