Pope Leo XIV Maintains Traditional Church Teachings, Focuses on Unity

Pope Leo XIV, elected four months ago, has reassured Catholics that he does not plan to change key Church teachings on gay marriage or women deacons.

In his first interview, the US-born pontiff emphasized that while attitudes in the Church may evolve, doctrine itself will remain the same for now.

The Pope said he shares his predecessor Francis’s desire to welcome all people into the Church, but he will not alter the Church’s official stance on marriage or sexuality.

He described issues relating to LGBTQ+ matters as “highly polarizing” and stressed his goal is to avoid further division within the Church.

On the subject of women deacons, a reform explored under Pope Francis, Leo said he has no immediate plans to change Church teaching but is open to listening to ongoing discussions.

Pope Leo also addressed the continuing crisis of sexual abuse within the Church. While acknowledging it as a “real crisis,” he emphasized that accused priests are presumed innocent until proven guilty and that the Church cannot focus solely on this issue.

Reflecting on his new role, the Pope said leading the Catholic Church is a 24-hour responsibility and involves significant adjustments to his previous life.

He also voiced concern about the growing global income divide, warning that placing value solely on wealth could harm society.

Pope Leo XIV’s approach is being seen as a shift from his outspoken predecessor, aiming to preserve traditional teachings while fostering unity and careful dialogue on sensitive issues.
