Eldoret, Kenya – September 11, 2025 – A 21-year-old student at Eldoret National Polytechnic, identified as Winnie Jelagat, has been found dead at her house in Teleview Estate after what police suspect was a botched self-induced abortion.
Friends who visited her house on Thursday morning said they were alarmed when she failed to respond to their calls. When they entered her room, they found her lifeless body on the bed.
According to witnesses, Winnie was found clutching her phone, appearing to have been trying to make a call for help. A pool of blood was discovered near the bed, and it is believed she suffered severe hemorrhage before she could receive medical attention.
Uasin Gishu County Police Commander Benjamin Mwanthi confirmed the incident and called on young women to seek safe, professional medical care in case of pregnancy-related complications.
“We urge students and young women to avoid taking dangerous measures in secrecy,” said Mwanthi.
“There are health facilities and counseling services available. This unfortunate loss should remind everyone of the risks of unsafe abortion practices.”
Medical professionals warn that unsafe abortions remain a leading cause of maternal deaths in Kenya, especially among young women and students. Limited access to reproductive health services and stigma often push victims to risky self-administered procedures.
Health advocates have urged institutions of higher learning to offer more sexual health education, counseling, and support services to prevent such tragedies.
Police have opened an inquest into the case and are working with medical experts to confirm the exact cause of death. Winnie’s body has been taken to the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital mortuary for a post-mortem examination.
Friends and classmates are reportedly organizing a candlelight vigil to honor her memory and raise awareness about safe reproductive health options.
