Police in Migori County are investigating a heartbreaking case after a 5-month-old baby was abandoned at Migori bus park under unclear circumstances.
The child was rescued by concerned members of the Bunge la Wananchi movement in Suna West sub-county, who found the infant under the care of a school girl who appeared confused and unsure of what to do.
According to Fredrick Ouma, the Suna West chairperson of Bunge la Wananchi, the baby’s mother had handed the child to the school girl, claiming she needed to quickly pick something from within the bus park. But the mother never returned, leaving the girl stranded with the baby.
The case was immediately reported to the local police and the Children’s Department, who are now actively trying to locate the child’s parents or any relatives.
“We are working together to ensure the safety of the child and to find out why the mother abandoned the baby,” said Ouma.
Ouma urged members of the public to be cautious when strangers ask them to look after children or bags in public places.
Winnie Atieno, another community member, echoed his concern and appealed directly to the child’s family to come forward.
“We are asking anyone who may know the mother or relatives of the child to report to the nearest police station or the children’s office,” she said.
The child is currently under the temporary care of authorities while investigations continue.
Child protection officers will continue to monitor the baby’s welfare and may seek to place the child in a safe shelter if no relatives come forward.
Police are also reviewing CCTV footage from the bus park and speaking to witnesses in an effort to identify the mother and understand her motives.
If you have any information about the identity or whereabouts of the child’s family, please contact Migori Police Station or the Department of Children Services.
