Manchester United will face Burnley in the Premier League this Saturday at Old Trafford, as manager Ruben Amorim looks to bounce back from a humiliating midweek defeat.
The Red Devils suffered an embarrassing Carabao Cup exit to fourth-tier side Grimsby Town on Wednesday. United were 2-0 down at half-time, forcing Amorim to bring on his big names from the bench, including captain Bruno Fernandes, star defender Matthijs de Ligt, and new signing Bryan Mbeumo.
Despite the changes, United couldn’t avoid a shock. The game ended in a penalty shootout, where Matheus Cunha missed a crucial spot-kick, and Mbeumo hit the crossbar, sending United crashing out of the competition.
The defeat has added pressure on Amorim, who admitted in his pre-match press conference that he had thought about quitting several times since replacing Erik ten Hag last November.
“Sometimes I love my players, sometimes I hate them,” Amorim said honestly. “But we move on. The focus is now on Burnley.”
Goalkeeper Andre Onana made his first appearance of the season against Grimsby but struggled, making costly mistakes. Therefore, Altay Bayindir is expected to start in goal.
New summer signings Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha are likely to feature again, while Bruno Fernandes will return to the starting XI.
Two big names are on their way out:
Alejandro Garnacho is close to joining Chelsea in a £40 million deal.
Rasmus Højlund is expected to sign for Napoli soon.
Injuries: Noussair Mazraoui and Lisandro Martínez remain sidelined.
Bayindir; Yoro, de Ligt, Shaw; Diallo, Casemiro, Fernandes, Dorgu; Mbeumo, Cunha; Sesko.
