Uganda’s ruling party, the National Resistance Movement (NRM), has officially endorsed President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni as its flag bearer for the 2026 presidential election.
The decision was announced during the NRM Delegates Conference held at Kololo Ceremonial Grounds in Kampala on August 27, 2025, where top party officials and thousands of delegates gathered to set the direction for the upcoming general elections.
Party chairman Tanga Odoi declared Museveni as the unopposed candidate, saying the decision reflects the trust and confidence the party has in his leadership.
“All NRM structures have unanimously agreed that President Yoweri Museveni will continue to lead our party and the country,” Odoi said.
President Museveni, who has been in power since 1986, thanked the delegates for their support and pledged to continue working towards economic growth and stability.
“I thank you for the confidence you have shown in me. Our mission remains to secure Uganda’s future and elevate it to an upper-middle-income status,” Museveni told the cheering delegates.
He also called for unity within the party, warning against internal divisions that could weaken NRM ahead of the elections.
So far, more than 200 people have picked nomination forms to run for president, including opposition figures. However, political analysts believe Museveni remains the frontrunner, given NRM’s dominance in the country.
The official campaign period is expected to begin in late 2025, with the general election scheduled for early 2026.
The NRM leadership has promised a peaceful and organized election, while security agencies have been put on alert to prevent any unrest during the campaign season.
