Uganda will face its biggest test yet when they take on defending champions Senegal in the quarterfinals of the TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN) on Saturday at the Nelson Mandela Stadium in Kampala.
This match marks a historic moment for the Cranes, who have reached the knockout stages for the first time in seven attempts. The team advanced after an unforgettable 3-3 draw with South Africa, which earned them top spot in Group C with seven points.
Uganda’s head coach Morley Byekwaso has urged his players to stay focused and disciplined to overcome the defending champions.
“This is not a friendly — it’s a knockout game where we must show character and discipline. Senegal is experienced, they’ve been champions for the last two years, but with our fans behind us, we believe we can achieve victory,” Byekwaso told CAFOnline.com.
He also reflected on the group stage drama:
“It was painful to see fans leaving when it looked like we wouldn’t make it. But in football, it’s not over until the final whistle. That moment tested our character and gave us strength to dream bigger.”
Midfielder Joel Sserunjogi of KCCA FC, who returns from suspension, expressed confidence ahead of the clash.
“Tomorrow feels like a final. We are mentally prepared for the battle ahead. Scoring my first goal in the tournament was special, but now my focus is on helping the team in this decisive match. No pressure — I just want to give my best.”
Senegal enters the match as favorites, given their recent success and experience. Historically, they have held the upper hand in meetings between the two nations. However, CHAN competitions are unique because they feature only home-based players, which gives Uganda a fighting chance.
With the match being played in Kampala, home support could be the extra motivation Uganda needs to pull off a historic win and book a place in the semifinals.
