Kenya, Tanzania Shine as Uganda, Sudan Face Tough Battles in CHAN 2024 Group Stage

The African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024 has delivered excitement for East Africa, with Kenya and Tanzania leading the way after strong performances in the group stages. Meanwhile, Uganda and Sudan face crucial final matches to secure their spots in the knockout rounds.

The tournament, which kicked off on August 2, 2025, is being co-hosted by Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, turning East Africa into the center of continental football. The event has been more than just a competition—it has been a showcase of local talent and a celebration of regional pride.

Kenya’s Harambee Stars dominated Group A, finishing top with 10 points from three wins and one draw. Their biggest highlight was a 1-0 victory over Morocco, proving their strength against one of Africa’s traditional football giants.

Tanzania’s Taifa Stars matched that success in Group B, also finishing with 10 points. Their journey started with a convincing 2-0 win against Burkina Faso, setting the pace for an unbeaten run in front of passionate home fans.

Uganda Cranes had a tough start, losing their opening match to Algeria, but bounced back with two wins, collecting 6 points. They must now win or draw against South Africa on August 18 to guarantee a place in the quarter-finals.

Sudan, representing the CECAFA region alongside the co-hosts, shocked many with a 4-0 victory over Nigeria in Group D. They lead the group with 4 points after two games, but their qualification will be decided when they face Senegal on August 19.

East African leaders are adding extra motivation through huge rewards for players:

Kenya: President William Ruto has promised Sh1 million per win, Sh500,000 per draw, and a grand prize of Sh600 million if Kenya wins the tournament. Each player will also receive a two-bedroom apartment for reaching the quarter-finals, upgraded to three-bedroom units if they make the semi-finals.

Uganda: President Yoweri Museveni pledged UGX 1.2 billion (Sh44 million) per win, making The Cranes’ matches high-stakes affairs.

Tanzania: President Samia Suluhu Hassan has offered TZS 1 billion (Sh49 million) if the Taifa Stars lift the trophy. She has also continued her “Goli la Mama” initiative, awarding TZS 10 million (Sh494,000) for every goal scored.
For Sudan, similar pledges are expected but have not been publicly announced.

With Kenya and Tanzania already through to the quarter-finals, all eyes will be on Uganda and Sudan in their decisive matches. If all four teams progress, it will mark a historic achievement for East African football.
