South Sudan and Uganda Strengthen Security Cooperation Amid Border Tensions

JUBA, South Sudan South Sudanese President Salva Kiir met with Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces, Muhoozi Kainerugaba, in Juba to discuss ways to improve regional security and stability.

During the meeting, President Kiir praised Uganda for its role in supporting peace efforts in South Sudan. Uganda currently has troops deployed in South Sudan at the request of the South Sudanese government to help manage clashes between government forces and rebels.

General Kainerugaba emphasized Uganda’s commitment to deepening military ties with South Sudan. After the meeting, he visited the headquarters of “Operation Mlinzi Wa Kimya” (“Silent Guardian”), where he met with Ugandan soldiers and commanders involved in the mission.

The talks come amid recent tensions along the shared border, where at least four soldiers were killed last month in clashes between Ugandan and South Sudanese forces. The disputed border areas include Uganda’s Yumbe and Moyo districts and South Sudan’s Kajo-Keji region.

To address these ongoing conflicts, both countries have set up a joint committee tasked with resolving the border dispute and preventing further military confrontations.

This meeting highlights the ongoing efforts by Uganda and South Sudan to maintain peace and cooperation in a region often affected by instability.
