President Museveni Meets Former Nigerian Leader Obasanjo, Discusses Boosting Dairy Exports

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni welcomed His Excellency Olusegun Obasanjo, the former President of Nigeria, to State House in Entebbe on August 8, 2025.

The two leaders held warm and productive discussions focused on strengthening economic cooperation between Uganda and Nigeria. A key part of their conversation was about increasing the export of Uganda’s finished dairy products to the Nigerian market and beyond.

President Museveni emphasized the importance of adding value to local agricultural products, especially milk, before export. He noted that Uganda produces high-quality dairy and stands to gain more by exporting finished products instead of raw materials.

“We are no longer interested in exporting raw milk. Our focus is on value addition so that our farmers and the country earn more. With support from partners like Nigeria, we can expand our markets and build stronger African economies,” President Museveni said.

Former President Obasanjo praised Uganda’s progress in agriculture and expressed strong interest in helping create business links between Ugandan dairy producers and Nigerian markets. He also discussed broader opportunities for trade and investment between the two countries.

The visit reflects growing efforts by African leaders to promote intra-African trade, in line with the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) goals, which aim to reduce trade barriers and increase the exchange of goods and services within the continent.

Both leaders agreed on the need for continued collaboration and pledged to support initiatives that benefit farmers, businesses, and consumers in both nations.
