Storm Floris Hits UK with Powerful Winds and Disruptions Across Scotland and Beyond

The UK is facing powerful winds and heavy rain as Storm Floris, the sixth named storm of the 2024/2025 season, sweeps across much of the country. The Met Office has issued amber and yellow weather warnings for strong winds that could cause major disruptions and even pose a danger to life in some areas.

Amber warning from 10:00 BST: Covers large parts of Scotland, especially the Western Isles, Skye, and Ross and Cromarty.

Yellow warning since 06:00 BST: In effect for Northern Ireland, north Wales, northern England, and other parts of Scotland.

According to BBC Weather’s Matt Taylor, the Western Isles and northern parts of Scotland could experience wind gusts of 70–80 mph, and possibly up to 90–100 mph in exposed areas during the late morning to early afternoon.

Later in the day, the strongest winds are expected to move towards north-east Scotland, including Caithness and the Beauly and Moray Firths. Inland areas may see gusts between 40 and 70 mph, especially on hills, bridges, and coastal areas.

Some train and ferry services have already been cancelled, with authorities warning of delays and further disruptions throughout the day. Roads in exposed areas may be affected by fallen trees or debris, and coastal flooding is also possible due to large waves.

The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo performance for Monday night has been cancelled due to safety concerns. Organisers said the safety of the audience, performers, and staff is their top priority. Ticket holders will automatically receive a refund.

They hope to resume performances on Tuesday, 5 August, but weather conditions will be closely monitored.

Travel Advice and What to Do
