For the first time in the history of African football, three countries Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda will co-host the 2026 African Nations Championship (CHAN).
This groundbreaking move by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) marks a major step in regional cooperation and sports development in East Africa.
The announcement was made during a joint press conference attended by football officials from all three nations, CAF representatives, and government leaders.
The tournament will bring together the best home-based players from across Africa and is scheduled to kick off in early 2026.
This will be the first time CHAN is hosted by more than one country, and also the first time it is held in East Africa. Each nation will host matches in multiple cities:
Kenya: Nairobi and Kisumu
Tanzania: Dar es Salaam and Arusha
Uganda: Kampala and Gulu
The decision to co-host reflects a shared vision of using football to unite the region, boost tourism, and improve infrastructure.
To prepare for the tournament, all three countries have begun renovating stadiums and upgrading roads, airports, and hotels. CAF has set strict timelines, and progress is being monitored closely to ensure facilities meet international standards.
In Kenya, the iconic Nyayo and Kasarani stadiums are being revamped. Uganda is focusing on finishing upgrades to Mandela National Stadium, while Tanzania is expanding training facilities in Dar es Salaam.
Hosting CHAN is expected to bring major benefits, including:
Job creation in construction, tourism, and event management
Boost in tourism as fans travel across borders
Increased exposure for local football talent
And strengthened regional partnerships between governments and football federations
Local businesses are hopeful for a surge in visitors and spending during the tournament, especially in hospitality and retail sectors.
The governments of Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda have pledged joint security operations to ensure fan safety during the event. Border protocols will be simplified to allow easier travel for fans between the three nations.
CAF praised the countries for their unity and commitment to regional peace through sport.
CHAN 2026 is more than just a football tournament it’s a symbol of what East Africa can achieve through unity and cooperation.
With the world watching, Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda have the chance to prove they are ready to host major global sporting events in the future.
