Bukwo District, Uganda – Sebei cultural leaders are spearheading efforts to end harmful practices in the initiation of girls, promoting a transition to safer, culturally accepted alternatives.
During the commemoration of the International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) on March 31, State Minister for Gender and Culture, Ms. Peace Mutuuzo, met with Dr. Patrick Kagurusi, Country Manager of Amref Health Africa in Uganda, to discuss strategies for cultural reform.
The newly endorsed curriculum, approved by the council of clan elders, guides communities on implementing initiation practices that honor tradition while eliminating health risks. Leaders emphasized that cultural values and the well-being of girls can coexist through education and awareness campaigns.
This initiative marks a critical step toward reducing FGM in the Sebei community, highlighting the role of local leadership in driving social change and protecting the rights and health of young girls.
